In visions of the dark night      I have dreamed of joy departed-- But a waking dream of life and light      Hath left me broken-hearted. Ah! what is not a dream by day      To him whose eyes are cast On things around him with a ray      Turned back upon the past? That holy dream- that holy dream,      While all the world were chiding, Hath cheered me as a lovely beam      A lonely spirit guiding. What though that light, thro' storm and night,      So trembled from afar- What could there be more purely bright      In Truth's day-star?

Guillaume Apollinaire

Guillaume Apollinaire (in French pronounced [gijom apɔliˈnɛʁ]) (August 26, 1880 - November 9, 1918) was a French poet, writer, and art critic born in Italy to a Polish mother.

Among the foremost poets of the early 20th century, he is credited with coining the word surrealism and writing one of the earliest works described as surrealist, the play Les Mamelles de Tirésias (1917, later used as the basis for an opera in 1947).

Two years after being wounded in World War I, he died at 38 of the Spanish flu during a pandemic.
