In visions of the dark night      I have dreamed of joy departed-- But a waking dream of life and light      Hath left me broken-hearted. Ah! what is not a dream by day      To him whose eyes are cast On things around him with a ray      Turned back upon the past? That holy dream- that holy dream,      While all the world were chiding, Hath cheered me as a lovely beam      A lonely spirit guiding. What though that light, thro' storm and night,      So trembled from afar- What could there be more purely bright      In Truth's day-star?

Louis Pasteur

Louis Pasteur (December 27, 1822 - September 28, 1895) was a French chemist best known for his remarkable breakthroughs in microbiology. His experiments confirmed the germ theory of disease, also reducing mortality from puerperal fever (childbed), and he created the first vaccine for rabies. He is best known to the general public for showing how to stop milk and wine from going sour - this process came to be called pasteurization . He is regarded as one of the three main founders of microbiology, together with Ferdinand Cohn and Robert Koch. He also made many discoveries in the field of chemistry, most notably the asymmetry of crystals.
