Johnny (Jack) Trice (1902 - October 8, 1923) was an African American football player from Iowa State College (now Iowa State University), who died due to injuries suffered during a college football game against the University of Minnesota on October 6, 1923. Many suspected the injuries inflicted were racially motivated. The assault that resulted in Trice's death had several parallels to another on-field assault against an African American representing an Iowa school, Drake University football player Johnny Bright, that occurred nearly thirty years later. The most obvious difference between the two incidents was that Bright's injuries were not fatal, and Bright went on to a Hall of Fame career in the Canadian Football League.
