Toward seven o'clock every morning, I leave my study and step Out on the bright terrace; the sun already burns resplendent Between the shadows of the fig tree, makes the low wall of coarse Granite warm to the touch. Here my tools lie ready and waiting, Each one an intimate, an ally: the round basket for weeds: The zappetta, the small hoe with a short haft ... There's a rake here as well, at at times a mattock and spade, Or two watering cans filled with water warmed by the sun. With my basket and small hoe in hand, facing the sun, I Go out for my morning walk.

Robert David Sanders Novak

Robert David Sanders Novak (born February 26, 1931) is a conservative American political commentator and journalist. Over his career, Bob Novak has become well-known as a columnist (writing Inside Report since 1963) and as a television personality (appearing on many shows for CNN, most notably on three former programs, The Capital Gang , Crossfire , and Evans, Novak, Hunt, and Shields). His memoirs entitled Prince of Darkness: Fifty Years Reporting in Washington were published in July 2007 by Crown Forum, a division of Random House. "Prince of Darkness" was a nickname given Novak by his friend, the reporter John Lindsay, because he thought for a young man, [Novak] took a very dim view of the prospects for our civilization."
