For three years, out of key with his time, He strove to resuscitate the dead art Of poetry; to maintain 'the sublime' In the old sense. Wrong from the start— No, hardly, but seeing he had been born In a half savage country, out of date.

William Carlos Williams

William Carlos Williams (September 17, 1883 - March 4, 1963), was an American poet closely associated with modernism and Imagism. He was also a pediatrician and general practitioner of medicine, a line of work that no doubt influenced the subject matter of his poetry. Williams "worked harder at being a writer than he did at being a physician," wrote biographer Linda Wagner-Martin. During his long lifetime, Williams excelled both as a poet and a physician.
