The popular education has been taxed with a want of truth and nature.... We are students of words: we are shut up in schools, and colleges, and recitation-rooms, for ten or fifteen years, and come out at last with a bag of wind, a memory of words, and do not know a thing.

If a man write a better book, preach a better sermon, or make a better mouse-trap than his neighbor, tho' he build his house in the woods, the world will make a beaten path to his door. [Mrs. Yule stated in The Docket, Feb. 1912, that she copied this in her handbook from a lecture delivered by Emerson. The mouse-trap quotation was the occasion of a long controversy, owing to Elbert Hubbards claim to its authorship.]

Often a certain abdication of prudence and foresight is an element of success.

There is no way to success in our art but to take off your coat, grind paint, and work like a digger on the railroad, all day and every day.

Work::'I look on that man as happy, who, when there is question of success, looks into his work for a reply.

The key to every man is his thought. Sturdy and defying though he look, he has a helm which he obeys, which is the idea after which all his facts are classified. He can only be reformed by showing him a new idea which commands his own.

Go, speed the stars of Thought On to their shining goals; -- The sower scatters broad his seed, The wheat thou strew'st be souls.

The gates of thought, how slow and late they discover themselves! Yet when they appear, we see that they were always there, always open.

Thought is the blossom; language the bud; action the fruit behind.

Thought is the seed of action; but action is as much its second form as thought is its first. It rises in thought, to the end that it may be uttered and acted. Always in proportion to the depth of its sense does it knock importunately at the gates of the soul, to be spoken, to be done.

It requires a great deal of boldness and a great deal of caution to make a great fortune, and when you have it, it requires ten times as much skill to keep it.

When you strike a king, you must kill him.

To the poet, to the philosopher, to the saint, all things are friendly and sacred, all events profitable, all days holy, all men divine.

Universities are, of course, hostile to geniuses, which, seeing and using ways of their own, discredit the routine: as churches and monasteries persecute youthful saints.

We do not yet trust the unknown powers of thought. Whence came all these tools, inventions, book laws, parties, kingdoms? Out of the invisible world, through a few brains. The arts and institutions of men are created out of thought. The powers that make the capitalist are metaphysical, the force of method and force of will makes trade, and builds towns.

People wish to be settled. It is only as far as they are unsettled that there is any hope for them.

Vigor is contagious, and whatever makes us either think or feel strongly ads to our power and enlarges our field of action.

Tart, cathartic virtue.

The highest virtue is always against the law.

The less a man thinks or knows about his virtues, the better we like him.

A vivid thought brings the power to paint it; and in proportion to the depth of its source is the force of its projection.

Every man has his own vocation, talent is the call.

Each man has his own vocation; his talent is his call. There is one direction in which all space is open to him.

A man is relieved and gay when he has put his heart into his work and done his best.

Work is victory.

'Work,' says Nature to man, 'in every hour, paid or unpaid; see only that thou work, and thou canst not escape the reward: whether thy work be fine or coarse, planting corn or writing epics, so only it be honest work, done to thine own approbation, it shall earn a reward to the senses as well as to the thought: no matter how often defeated, you are born to victory. The reward of a thing well done is to have done it.'

Every really able man, in whatever direction he work ... if you talk sincerely with him, considers his work, however much admired, as far short of what it should be.

The world is a divine dream, from which we may presently awake to the glories and certainties of day.

Some natures are too good to be spoiled by praise.

Some thoughts always find us young, and keep us so. Such a thought is the love of the universal and eternal beauty.

Some will always be above others. Destroy the inequality today, and it will appear again tomorrow.

Sow a thought and you reap an action; sow an act and you reap a habit; sow a habit and you reap a character; sow a character and you reap a destiny.

Spartans, stoics, heroes, saints and gods use short and positive speech.

Speech is power: speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel. It is to bring another out of his bad sense into your good sense.

Striving is perhaps the one and only true elixir, for while we converse with what is above us, we do not grow old, but grow young.

Sunday is the core of our civilization, dedicated to thought and reverence.

Sympathy is a supporting atmosphere, and in it we unfold easily and well.
